Safely Share Digital Files Locally And Over The Internet
The ShareCenter™ 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure, when used with internal SATA drives*, enables users to share documents, files, and digital media such as music, photos, and videos with other users on a home or office network. Remotely accessing files through the Internet is also possible using the built-in secure FTP server and web file server. Keep data safe by giving rights to specific users or groups and assign them to folders with specific read/write permissions. This function is ideal for the home, where children’s access can be restricted to only age-appropriate materials.
Stream Digital Media Content With Built-in Media Server
Back up your digital media files to the ShareCenter™ for safekeeping, and enjoy the benefits of the built-in UPnP AV media server. Stream digital content to compatible media players such as the PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, or D-link’s Boxee Box.
Access Your Personal Files From Anywhere
The ShareCenter™ includes a web file server which allows you to download your documents, photos, and other multimedia files from anywhere. Once configured, simply log into your ShareCenter™ using the friendly web user interface to view a listing of available files. A convenient USB port on the front of the ShareCenter™ can be used to attach external USB storage drives, USB printers, or an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for monitoring.
Enjoy Performance, Protection, And Flexibility
The availability of four different hard drive modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1) allows users to choose the configuration best suited to their needs. Standard mode creates two separately accessible hard drives. JBOD combines both drives to create a single, easy to use volume. RAID 0 combines both drives in a “striped” configuration, which provides the highest performance when using a Gigabit Ethernet connection. RAID 1 creates a copy of your data on both drives, providing maximum protection; if one drive fails while configured as RAID 1, the unaffected drive continues to function as a single drive until the failed drive is replaced. The new drive will then be re-mirrored, allowing the ShareCenter™ to return to its full level of protection.
Robust Software Included
The included CD contains D-Link’s Setup Wizard and Easy Search Utility, which allows users to locate the ShareCenter™ anywhere on the network. Once located, they can use the utility to map the hard drive(s) so they will appear in “My Computer” on their PC. Backup software is also included on the CD, allowing users to back up valuable files from a computer to the ShareCenter™ manually, according to a schedule, or in real-time. Real-time backups are a great way to safeguard against unforeseen>

I’d finally had enough of my Drobo’s bizarre behaviour (strange slow performance, patchy connection, running very hot, previous data loss) and dreadful desktop software. As it started acting up again in recent weeks I plumped for a ‘proper’ NAS: [a DLink DNS-320][http://amzn.to/2wM2Ukd].
The in-box manuals for it are terrible though, and you only get a Windows Install CD. Here’s how to set it up on Mac using the web interface.
Discovered on Macworld I used the
arp
command to find the IP of the newly connected NAS, by listing all the IPs of devices on your network.…then try the last IP address in the list in you web browser. It looks like 10.0.1.xx or 192.168.0.xx. If you keep working your way up the list of IP addresses you’ll eventually hit on the web interface for the ShareCenter. There’s currently no password to the default ‘admin’ user name so log in and format your drives.
Once all sorted (you might have to log back in due to aggressive timeouts), run the wizard to set your admin password and change the name of the device.
Then you probably want to head get the latest firmware from your local DLink site… mine is Singapore but you might be in the UK or somewhere else.
There are dire warnings about installing the correct geographical version, how much of that is true I don’t know, best to be safe though. You might want to grab the updated manual too. You need to find the Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade page.
Then once you’ve uploaded, rebooted and signed in (using your new password) you can do important stuff like turn on AFP (apple native networking) in Management > Application Management.
Sorted. I’m in a RAID 1 config, so far it seems simpler, faster and more stable than the old Drobo.
